Using Household Items
New gardeners can look to those who’ve been doing it the Frugalitarian way for years for the best growing tips. They’ll tell you your home is full of items to help you create the luscious yard and garden you’ve been dreaming of. Here are 7 household items every gardener should be saving.
- 2-liter Soft Drink Bottles. Cut the bottoms off and use the tops as green houses for individual plants. Your tender little plants will appreciate the extra protection early in the growing season.
- Milk Jugs. Fill them with water and place them around your garden plants. They retain heat from the sun and help keep plants warm on chilly nights.
- Used Dryer Sheets. Put them in pots over drainage holes to keep the soil from escaping.
- Cardboard Egg Cartons. Start seedlings in these biodegradable little pots. When you’re ready to plant, just break off each section and put it right into the ground.
- Old Pantyhose. Cut the legs off and use them as plant supports. Their stretchiness will allow the plant to grow without getting damaged.
- Used Coffee Grounds. Great fertilizer can be made from coffee grounds. After your cuppa joe, dump the grounds into the soil.
- Banana Peels. Another great fertilizer can be made from banana peels. Put them in the freezer until you’re ready to use them. Then dig a hole slightly deeper than you normally would and place strips of the banana peel at the bottom of the hole. Then, put soil and the plant in and get ready for a beautiful, hardy garden.
